A Tribute to Maya Angelou

From the African forests
Where the free birds sing
Flying from nests to nests
Avoiding the hunter’s sling.

Beyond the great ponds
Of the lands lying wasted
Nature builds on the grounds
With beaks and heads crested.

When caged of their freedoms
With bamboo sticks and wrappers
The birds in their nature’s kingdoms
Long to sing of the feared trappers.

Freedom is so sweet to the soul
Like what the gentle breeze brings
That is why we know all
Of what the caged bird sings.

RIP Maya Angelou
